Somewhere around the 1960’s, the false aesthetic of the flat abdomen was inflicted upon society, perhaps as an excuse to sell more department store manikins. The problem with flat abs is that they are not very aesthetically pleasing. Most artists or professional photographers can tell you that real interest is created not by one or two-dimensional subjects, but by the light and shadow playing upon the hills and valleys of the human form as the eye glides along them.

Early attempts to re-shape body fat using traditional liposuction techniques produced decidedly mixed results. Contouring using the vacuum method often creates somewhat unnatural contours, surgical complications such as deep bruising, scarring, and extended social downtime and recovery. Overcoming the primary weaknesses of traditional liposuction has long been the goal of plastic surgery: what to do with the freshly-created excess skin afterward, because, once fat was removed, there was no other way to return the skin to smaller contours, other than by surgical excision.

Over the past few years, medical technology has introduced a number of treatments that can re-build and re-tighten the skin’s collagen, subsequently re-tightening the skin to a certain degree.
